Sick Hen Help Please
« on: August 05, 2008, 21:00 »
Hi all, ive still not progressed to getting my own hens yet till i come back from my holidays, but my friend has a few hens with missing feathers on the wings and they look sore. Does anyone know what this may be and treatment required.

Are they pecking each other Geoff ?

I'd spray some "Purple Spray" onto the bald patches.

Doesn't look like moulting, trust me I'm getting to be an expert! (See My Ducks don't float)
Be like a duck. Calm on the surface but always paddling like the dickens underneath.

Is there a cockerel with the flock? Looks as though she's been trodden a few times! ;)

Agree with aggie possibly a cockerel -their backs look OK though. Check if they have any evidence of blood from pecking. Maybe a couple of poultry saddles would help.

Hi yes their is a cockerel, but also 27 other hens that dont have this, three of these which are the same breed do though. Is it possible they are moulting?

Possible but doesn't really look like it in my (duck) experience. When moulting they look generally scuffy with feathers falling out all over but generally starting on the chest and working backwards and then over the back. Never seen it so focal. Looks like trauma one way or the other.
