Title: main crop spuds

lame question am a newbie :)

when can i pull main crop spuds? the tops are begining to die.

Usally when the foilage dies back they wont grow anymore, so id pull them up  :)

Is it true you can leave them in the soil until required?  A friend of mine did this last year after the tops had died off and just pulled out what she needed from time to time.

Mine are just in spud bags on the patio (first time growing spuds, so I didn't grow many).

You can and people do. The problem I have with mine is slugs would eat them before I did :(

and other nasties like wireworms then have a chance to bite holes in them too, so I dig them up if they are in the ground -- mine'll be growing still for a couple more weeks though, as they are nt yet collopsing  :D

I have odd ones in the row that have gone yellow and haulms have died but I think thats because yet again I may have gone some of my varieties mixed up but I shall lift all those  this weekend. With all this rain and now its been over 24hours non stop the slugs will be having a field day. Most of th main crop still good and dark green foliage.
