Going from free range to penned
« on: March 25, 2010, 09:07 »
As much as I love my chooks to be out in my entire garden, I have to admit they have pretty much destroyed it over the course of the year.  I spent a fortune on bulbs and plants last spring, and they just dug everything up, so this year I'm considering penning them in one part of the garden permanently.

Do you think a space of 6m x 10m would be suitable for about 15 chooks?

yes I should think so, but could you do half and half, so they have one side to eat and the other growing grass so they can be switched between the two, giving the ground time to recover and be cleaned up.

I agree with compost queen, split the ground in two and swap them over every month or so  :)
Staffies are softer than you think.

But if she split the ground they would only have the minimum of space that we recommend on here :(

they would have 2 square meters each and every month it would be fresh and possibly there would be fresh grass for them which as free range they have been used to but without the bulbs

Well I'd have to measure up properly, but once I have all of the green waste shredded or sawn up, I could have a space about 6m x 10m then an extra 4m x 10m, but the extra space is pretty shaded by the side of the house.

Think I'd be tempted to let them have the lot, I think more space is probably more important than green space.

Mine ate grass when they had it, but they can still do that, cos I make sure they get the grass cuttings from the garden.

What they really love to do is dig!  Don't need green grass for that, just lots of lovely soil :D

I planted my bulbs the other day, only to find one of my girls following along behind me digging them back up  After planting them again for about the 20th time I gave up, guess I won't be growing much this year :(
