Title: Pumpkin contest 2011
Post by: Y.E.A.H on March 22, 2011, 12:23
Hello all,

Unfortunately i haven't got time this year to run the heaviest pumpkin competition, so if there are any takers that would like to run it they are more than welcome to take it over :)

Best regards

Y.E.A.H

Ok........I'll do it :)

The winner will grow the biggest pumpkin, rather than the heaviest.
You will have to post pics of the final measurement and we'll also have a poll for your favourite pic at the end, for the pretty rather than large pumpkins :)

Obviously it has to be grown and not bought  , but it can be any variety you would like to grow.

Ends 31st October

let me know if you want to play  :nowink:

Playing so far:

DD........fifty something, but it looks pretty in the harvest festival pic ;)

Last year we did the biggest pumpkin, rather than the heaviest.
Post pics of the final measurement and we'll also have poll for favourite pic.

Obviously it has to be grown and not bought  ::), but it can be any variety you like to grow :)

How does that sound :)

I was so optimistic about last years competition... was my first year with an allotment and basically my first year growing anything... Managed a nice perfect halloween sized pumpkin but nothing larger... Dont think i fed it enough though!

Put me down for this years competition please.. will have to try again :)

Add me to the list please.

(Forgot to say, when I carved last years it broke the knife in two - may not be able to grow the biggest, but probably the toughest!)

I'd definitely like to give this a go, hopefully some competition will encourage my pumpkins to get larger than the golf ball sized efforts of previous years.

Also, what varieties are people growing. I picked up some Atlantic Giant seeds and am hoping that they live up to their name.

I'm growing Jack O' Lantern and Atlantic Giant. The AG needed to be started off on wet kitchen paper in a tub, a bit like sweetcorn chitting. They wouldn't start just in a pot in a propagator.

Well disaster this morning.

OH has just informed me that the 2 giant pumpkin plants we had have been eaten last night along with a corgette and 3 butternut squashes.

They have eaten through the stems and left the leaves apparently.
She lifted the tray that they were sat in to find 2 rather large slugs  >:(
She is now on slug patrol under the other trays and pots.

The little *******  >:(  >:(

So thats me out of the running.  :(

I grow 6 pumpkin's every year and on Halloween night we go to my daughters home and have a BBQ and carve up the pumpkin's, the first year my youngest daughters husband said NO WAY it's childish, well he did have a go and his was the best one.
We are this year thinking of floating them down the canal with lights in them.

Nothing too remarkable!

It's just an arbitary level set to ensure that it's our active members that can participate and not someone who joins trying to win the competitions, (not just this one), although you'll never make your fortune from the prizes.

I'll sure you'll manage another 15 posts before the end of October!

I have a question...
The closing date is on 31st October, is that the date that the pumpkin should be measured or can they be measured at any time before that date ?  Mine are going great guns , but I am worried they will not stay the course!  Can ?I keep taking photos and just enter the biggest one?

Thanks
June

Just to help get my numbers up to fifty so i can claim 1st prize    :D thought i would provide a quick update pic of my pumpkin, the black case is off my blackberry as a size guide.
problem is this plant has 4 pumkins of similar size on the same vine and i cant bring myself to cull the others to make it focus on just one!

What variety is this?

 @simonwatson

Its dills giant atlantic purchased from T&M a couple of years ago. I grew them last year saved the seeds but had a total failure in germination from the saved seeds, then found two seeds in the old packet and both germinated fine !

I've got one pumpkin which is slightly larger than a tennis ball all the others dropped off when smaller than this. Does it mean its been pollinated and will keep growing now or is there a fear it might still fall?

I'm interested too - I put in two pumpkin plants (generic garden centre from the same tray). One has a decent sized yellow pumpkin growing, and this morning I found a tennis ball sized, dark green one on the other. Will this turn orange, or stay green? I suppose it'll taste the same?
Title: Re: Pumpkin contest 2011
Post by: mumofstig on July 19, 2011, 11:58
They don't all turn yellow/orange - some even stay green until they've been stored for quite a while - I still had a green one at New Year  8)

You do notice a change in their colour when they get ripe though and (apart from the ginourmous ones) the size will tell you.
Also the skins get a lot tougher so you can hardly dig a fingernail in.

Why do they say to put pumpkins on a piece of glass and when do you start to do that?
Title: Re: Pumpkin contest 2011
Post by: DD. on July 25, 2011, 16:18
I wouldn't recommend glass from a safety point of view, but anything like an old tile, piece of slate etc. can be used.

It's just a barrier between the pumpkin and the soil to stop the nasties burrowing in.

Hi I can't enter this competition as not enough posts.
Anyway i've never grew pumpkins before but my daughter gave me some seeds from a magazine,Out of 10 seeds only 2 managed to survive to produce pumpkins, and the plants seemed to go on forever.
They produced 6 pumpkins between them, about the size of a football, sonot going to win any competitions with them! anyway.

Some 1 put me out of my misery :( :(

There must be some big'ish pumpkins out there!

Seem's like its a poor year for size up here but have 3-4 football size per plant :D :D

Well here's a pic of my 3 and I'm fairly pleased with them, all the foliage is starting to die back now so I'm tempted to harvest them now to be honest as there's a risk they'll get nicked :-(

The one on the left is the largest it's not just a trick of the photo.

I'd get them in, Paul. Looking at the colour, as you say, they won't get any bigger and it'd be a shame to lose them.

Walked into our local convenience store, to see two huge pumpkins about twice the size of mine, which I am pleased with, one was labeled up as 58 kg ( didnt look at the price)  Now thinking mine are a bit small,  :(

Harvested my pair this weekend.

One of them crossed with a Crown Prince but still gave a weight of 78lb.

The other one is 74 inches and weighs 106lb. Has a chance.

Last years was lighter but still won the village contest so...fingers crossed.

Trying to send pics from phone to pc.

Well, finally got mine in today, never got a chance at the weekend.

Only 3 of them in total but the largest is 55 inches which I'm quite pleased with personally. (http://i32.photobucket.com/albums/d33/Donegal_Paul/Allotment/p04.jpg)

I weighed all three and they go from 12kg to 18kg to the big one weighing in at 24kg.

I used a paint pot and the bathroom scales reset to zero so it was only weighing the pumpkin and not the paint obviously. This way with the big one on I could see the scales :-)

i bought mine in today

my arms are still sore from lifting it so will post a pic with measurement very soon.

I wont know the weight as i don't have any scales which is a shame.

im very proud to say the least and certainly put the "Giant Pumpkins" at tesco to shame

lordanatos - you've unintentionally created a bit of a quandry.

Whilst it's not specified to the letter, the ethos behind this is to register at the start of the season and see where we get at the end of it, not to suddenly appear towards the end of the season with what could be a winner.

You've not actually registered as requested in the posts at the start of the thread and therefore, by the book you are not "officially" in the contest.

If yours is the biggest it may not seem fair to the others who did register.

It's not my decision, but I feel inclined to stick with those who have put their names down, think about a closing date for entries if we do it next year, and for this year have a "this is what you're up against next time" category.

Who's decision is it DD?
You're correct in saying that it isn't specified to the letter that their name has to be down in order to take part...
To my mind, it doesn't really make a huge difference to anyone else's pumpkin size to know exactly who else, or how many other pumpkins they are up against? A biggun is a biggun... it doesnt change anyone else's growing tactics if that makes sense...
It would be different if this late entry was someone who literally just joined the board to then say they had the largest pumpkin...  :nowink:

heres one of mine

only been on the grow for about 3 weeks so doing rather well !

measuring about 50" at the mo though wont really know till its harvested

my little helper loves them

It's clear from the above post, back in August that Lordthanatos has considered himself in the competition for at the past two months, would it be fair to fault him for not literally asking or saying:
"Can you please put my name down?" because for me at least, that's evidence enough that his entry is more than valid.

I note your opinion Spartacat - but it's not your decision who should be included in the competition, or not.

The decision was made by moderators, and not just DD - lordthanotos, and everyone else, will remember to make sure they put their names down next year, won't they  ;)

That's sad stu :(

Please can you all measure & post photo of your pumpkins if they are big ones, or
just post photo of the rest so we can choose the prettiest one :nowink:

The closing date is 31st October, so please post by then.

ps: there are a few people that need to make some more posts in order to qualify ;)

What a great Idea !! Next year I'll be in on this for sure. This year I was not prepared. My pumpkin patch is cleaned out, and what I don't sell, goes to the pigs and live-stock. Count me in next year!

Sorry but im with spartacat on this one.
I think that someone has done a really good job in getting one this size and feel that not being aloud in could be quite discouraging in a major way for them and their child  :nowink:

He posted back in August, why didn't a Mod tell him he needed to put his name down?
I feel there has been a mistake from both the Mods and the member.

I personally think the decision should be overturned, just my opinion but i would like to hear what others think about it!

I think it's a pumpkin competition, on a website.
There will be another one next year probably.
Just judge the ones who entered at the beginning and admire the other fine ones.

Exactly, so why can't he be aloud in?

Possibly so, but how would you feel if you grew a fab one this year thinking you may win, only to be told what he has, a simple genuine mistake that in my opinion would be overlooked if it wasn't so big  ;)

Title: Re: Pumpkin contest 2011
Post by: mumofstig on October 25, 2011, 09:56
I don't think anybody would grow a big pumpkin 'because they thought they might win' this competition  ;) We grow them for personal satisfaction, surely.

When I took on this competition it was supposed to be a bit of fun between friends, with no prize!....and very little in the way of rules, apparently ::)

So to restore harmony ...............anybody that has already posted on this thread will be included in the judging. as long as they have made enough posts to qualify.
(If the competition is run next year.........the rules will be made plain at the outset)

My Atlantic Giant weighed in at 33Kg's and 56 inches circumference. Alas no picture as the neighbours I gave it to have already started eating it ::) ::)
I did get a lot of enjoyment in giving it to them, as I know they are vegetarians and that they would put it to good use!

It's obviously not been a good year for pumpkin growing with very few posted results  :(

So Well done to lordthanatos  for a whopping 82 inch winner

Squibbs was 2nd with 64 ins

and teasmade 3rd with 61ins.

The prettiest pumpkin prize goes to DD. simply because I like a nice harvest festival display  ;)

Roll on next year  :D

WoW 2nd - I am surprised - for an Atlantic giant its not all that big, though a lot larger than the pumpkin on the sister plant (the little one in the barrow)

Hopefully next year we shall all be bigger and better
