chooks eating flowers
« on: March 25, 2012, 21:12 »
hey wondering if any ones got any ideas..... i have recently let my girls out and they have taken a real shine to my flowerbeds, can anyone suggest what i can do apart from a) keep them in b)Put a fence around a roaming area or the flowers. Is there anything they dont like i.e chilli powder. that can be sprinkled over the beds?

Someone will know what they don't like. Mine hasn't touched my hyacynths and irises - I'd let the hens do the gardening and plant more of what they don't eat next year!

Chickens and gardens..... there are endless posts on here about this.
My garden looks like a concentration camp with chicken wire and bamboo stick fencing round all the precious beds including the veg and fruit. The rest gets pretty trashed so I'm concentrating on woody shrubs and perennials there.
However, they provide me with eggs, poo for my compost, rid me of slugs and snails and keep the weeds (and any other ground cover) down.
And they love it out in the sun in the many dust baths they've made in the beds......

I also have this problem of chickens running amok in all my flower beds! I've found that a little low fence about 2 ft high deteres them somewhat. Alternatively you can try and make raised beds, but not completely chicken proof.

Good Luck!
