Not used one myself but I figure you'd need to be sowing a fair few of whatever to make it worthwhile.

i agree john but imagine never thinning anything out .you could go halfs 3 ways with 4 of your mates to spread the cost.dont know if you can get a smaller version.i had one of those syringe types but lost it last year and found it in march this year with the rotovator in many pieces :) .

I just wonder if you would end up spending more time setting up the machine but  I'm a sucker for gadgets so I've thought about getting one in the past - until She Who Must Be Obeyed pointed out I've got a Mantis and a Merry Tiller and that's that! :)

It looks very complicated, and I agree, you would need to be doing a lot of sowing to make it worthwhile. On the other hand, I use one from Wolf tools which has various settings and is most useful for peas, beans spinach etc. Very small seeds (eg carrot) can tend to slip through, but it certainly works and is easy on the back, too, as you can switch handles on all these Wolf tools, so there's less to carry around.

I've seen the seed drill but never used one. I do have some Wolf hand tools though, a trowel, hand fork and a hand hoe.  Ended up with a handle for each of them as it was easiest. I notice they do a hand (I think) seeder as well but not for the UK for some reason.

I think the big seeders would be ideal if you were doing something like a smallholding - long and multiple rows. But I suppose the best bet is to try one and see first.

I have one and its good.
I use pelleted seed in now because it makes the spacing very accurate.
put about 4000 onion in today in less than an hour.
always have a target
and an objective.

4000 onions - boy you must like them! 300 would do us for a year.

I know a guy who pestered his boss at the nursery to get one for about three years. In the end they got him one.
He used it once.
It's still in his shed collecting dust some 15 years later.
"takes too long to set up" said himself when asked why he dosen't use it,
"may as well do it by hand"

I think some seed drills are tricky to set up. But the earthway have a seed disc (several disc's for different seed) which taper locks in seconds and then adjust planting depth and row spacing.
Its very easy to use.
