Would you kick it out of bed?
« on: February 01, 2010, 20:15 »
Now I have your attention I have a question.  I am moving home and there are many jerusalem artichokes in my veg bed.  Should I dig them out or just leave them as a surprise for the new tenant?  8)

Is it a nice surprise? I know it's difficult to get rid of them but are they a good crop?

They are a wonderful crop.  Maybe a little too successful.

I am not taking this too seriously, just a bit of fun.  But, they can be a menace.

But I really can't be bothered to move them.  The person I am swapping with has absolutely no interest in cooking.

You'ld never get them all out first time & would have to keep on going back - so just leave them ::)

I'd leave them. If the new tenant doesn't cook, then she probably doesn't garden either and wouldn't know the difference between JA's and a windbreak  :D. Or tall weeds, come to think of it. Sounds like you're not up to snuff to dig them out yourself anyway. Your loss, her gain  ;)

Be honest Ice - they're the reason you're moving really aren't they.

You just can't face another helping.  :D

Ice, we inherited a row (rapidly a thicket    ) of jerusalem artichokes in our front garden when we moved in, which did usefully screen our garden from next door.

Mr Sunny thought they were sunflowers and thought they were pretty pathetic

He dug them all up and riddled the soil to try to get rid of all the funny roots ( as he called them)  ----- year after year after year, after ................

six years or so later they had gone  competely

Can't you just tell them they are miniature sunflowers for screening?   :) :)
