Is anyone else's rhubarb going mad
« on: May 23, 2013, 18:40 »
We have had 70 stalks already and to be honest it probably still has 150 left  I don't remember picking such big crops of it before, slightly worried as we put in a couple of plants last year out the front. We haven't even started picking those because they are new crowns and already they are way over the three foot wall

I am not rhubarbs biggest fan but I keep trying. Now if someone could invent rhubarb chocolate I may change my mind.

Is the weather causing such a bumper harvest with the rhubarb

Rhubarb is rather watery. It must like the weather. Ours is flowering and every time we cut off the flowers there are more coming.

Ours did this a few years ago, just gave it extra water (hard to believe it was needed) and chopped flowers off daily

Stewing it, making crumbles, putting it in the freezer and giving it away! ???
It does seem a bit watery this season; it works out about 50p a stalk in the supermarkets!

I like it fairly well sweetened, but with lemon juice and zest. :)

Ours are doing nothing, about 4 small leaves. It is their first year and they are looking rather sorry for themselves. Should I feed them? The next door plot's rhubarb is massive and looks great. Most of the other allotmenteers' rhubarbs are flowering though.

I've got one older crown which isn't very good, one I planted last year and another 3 or 4 this year, which don't seem to be doing much at all and in fact I think have mostly died. It's my ambition to grow enough to try some rhubarb wine :)

I have to say it's not my favourite fruit in crumble though. It's kind of bland really.

shokkyy i am washing cutting and weighing mine before freezing it until i have enough to make a dj or two of wine - last year gave most of mine away but as i make my own wine anyway thought i should try rhubarb - just need a good recipe.  Made raspberry wine last year ended up over sweet but my damson/plum wine was fantastic but had to wait a year - praying for a good fruit crop this year x

Am I the only person that peels rhubarb? I thought everybody did until I chatted with some people about it and discovered none of them did. But if you don't peel it, you get all those fibrous bits left on the outside.

PS Jokey - you tried asking for a recipe on the Homebrew forum here?

Yes, feed them with some well-rotted manure gently forked in around the crown or spread around (not on). They are only babies, and they won't get massive for a few years. Mine were bought as 2-year crowns last year, and are sitting in 42litre trugs filled with a roughly 50:50 mix of compost and manure.

We've had 2 lots of about 30 stalks so far this year from the 2 crowns. They are thin and shortish and incredibly intense in flavour. Delicious!

My neighbour's crowns are much older and are trying to take over the world. He gives armsful away each week.

There is some on the community allotment (which I help out with) which seems to have got rather large in the last month or so.

It does seem to be a very good year for it, hopefully a sign of things to come!
