Title: What to do, my onion crop batterd by wind
Post by: Amilo on August 19, 2012, 10:57
Its never happen to me before, half of my onion crop has been blown flat by strong winds a few days ago.

I doubt that they will pick them selves up but will they continue to grow?

Any suggestions?

Mine were flattened over two months ago and are ok and still in the ground whilst we have some nice sun to help ripen them. As long as they are just bent over, they should still be ok but won't make too much growth now anyway.

Onions go over naturally when they mature. The wind may just have helped this process

It's about that time of year that onions will naturally fall over anyway and as Salmo says, the wind just helped.  Growth will start to slow down now but if you leave the onions too long in the soil, they'll start to regrow into seed producers which is their natural cycle.
