Potatoes chitted but not ready to plant
« on: February 28, 2011, 15:52 »
Hi,
I bought my seed potatoes a few weeks ago because the shelves of the shop were already running low.
I have stored them since then in the dark but when I opened them up yesterday to begin chitting, they already have growths about 2-5cm long on.
This is the length I would normally plant them.
Yet it's not the right time yet - the ground is cold and the soil has been too wet to dig.

So will these be spoilt by the time I should be planting - I reckon 2 or 3 weeks away?

Thanks,

Nial

A common problem caused by incorrect storage.

Have a look at this recent similar question:

Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Thankyou DD.
I think they must have been stored incorrectly by the supplier  :(

Having them in the dark has not helped!

I made that 'mistake' in my first year. I thought that the garden centre would store seed spuds better than me and left it late - big mistake. Now I buy early and chit them myself.

Try moving yours to a light cold place. They'll hopefully not grow much more.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry too much. I planted some two years ago that had massive long chits, then the same variety a year later that had only tiny ones - same crop size/quality from both.

I still think that, on balance, chitting is worthwhile but I wouldn't get all hung up on it.

Well the thing is they're chitting themselves!
In fact they were sprouting a little bit when I bought them three weeks ago.
I'm sure they'll be alright - I usually have missed ones from last year groing all over the place  ::)

If they were sprouting when you bought them, the chitting process had already started. Their dormancy had been broken and you can't stop it.

They really needed setting up to continue chitting properly once you got them home.

I would try and buy some more.  I made the same mistake last year.  I should've known better but left them in the carrier bag too long.  I took the (white looking chits off, they should be dark if chitted in the light).  They did chit again properly but I got a very poor crop.
