Fruit tree cutting advice
« on: September 18, 2018, 20:56 »
After a great year for my dwarfstock grafted-pear tree I want to try an air layering cutting for the first time. The conundrum is if it is successful what size would the tree grow too. Would planting it into a 600mm pot and therefore contain the roots keep the tree to a manageable size and still give a reasonable harvest?

It's not normal to airlayer fruit trees as the resulting tree would be on unknown vigour, pears especially can be very large. The variety of pear will give you an indication but 20'+ shouldn't be a surprise.

If you're itching to propagate the tree the best option is to graft it onto a suitable rootstock probably quince C for a pot in the spring. It's easy enough to do, even with my fat fingers.
