Nettle tea
« on: April 13, 2011, 16:03 »
I have one of those blue barrels with the lid and metal seal still attached to make it nice and air tight would this work? So I can avoid the fettid smell i.e. is the process anerobic or not?  I really don't fancy eating my lunch with my nostrils filled with the smell of an open sewer.

also has anyone any idea of ratios all the instructions I've come across just say fill the bucket etc and weight down...

I would like to know if anyone has messed about with making up differnt recipes i.e. adding woodash and manure to boost the NPK values or would this be counter productive?

any advice would be very welcome

I made some yesterday with a mix of comfrey and nettles. I wanted it to really be comfrey tea but have not got enough comfrey leaves yet so topped up with nettles. Filled a black bin bag with the leaves. Stuck a fork into it a few times to puncture. Tied some nylon string round the top to keep it shut and stop it from getting lost in my blue water but (I put a half brick into it to make sure it does not float). It is now festering away and should be ready to use for my spuds and toms in a month or so. I have also filled an old chicken manure tub with the same mix of leaves and water and will keep pouring the liquid from this into the blue bin to top it up.

I use a similar method to the one above but I add an onion sack half full of sheep droppings. I don't know the chemistry of why it works but it the tomatoes love it.

I'm trying this for the first time using a big empty bird seed tub, also using nettles and comfrey.. Forgot to add the water though, guess I'll be heading back down tomorrow..
