Hi,

I'm new to gardening and my neighbour has just told me that you should not compost ivy. Unfortunately I already have added a lot to my compost bin. I've fished most of it out but can't be sure I've got it all.

How much of a problem is this? And is there anything I can do to mitigate it short of chucking the whole lot out and starting again?

I don't know why, but if you fished out most of it there shouldn't be a problem. I wouldn't worry, but then I never do

I would never do it but I can say from experience that when you turn the compost or spread or use it the ivy will still be obvious and you can fish it out then. I am sure you dont need to worry about it now.

I put all "hard" weeds and things like couch grass, docks, seeds, and so on  in a bucket or barrel and cover with water, weigh them down and leave them for a month or two. It will kill anything, and you get nutrient rich liquid to add to the plants.
