Dead Duck in the pond, suspected mink attack
« on: December 03, 2009, 17:58 »
 :( Hi All,

We were about all day, he was in the garden building a shed and I was in the kitchen which looks out onto the garden and we didn't notice a thing.

The ducks and chickens having a very normal day, was in and out to them all the time with tit bits. Around 3.30pm hubbie went down to check for eggs and found a duck dead in the pond. He lifted it out and the underside was all ripped out and it had gone into rigor mortice.

Really a bit upset, as I love the ducks most of all, it was a Kakhi Campbell not one our Aylesburies, but a mature egg layer  :(

Is this mink? We aren't sure if the duck got into the water to get away from the attack or was the attacker in the pond? Any advice? Where do we go from here?

Thanks all,

Carrie.

All I know is that Minks can swim, but I'm not sure they could attack in the water and hold themselves up at the same time.
It is more likely to have attacked at the edge of the water and as you said, the duck was probably trying to escape.

Very sad, whatever the cause, so sorry.

Do you have mink locally?

Hi All,

Yes there is mink locally, a farm down the road got their hens cleared out a few months ago from  mink.
Interestingly, our chicken breeder said it probably was not a mink as he says that they go for the neck and/or snap the head off, he said it sounded like a dog!
And we do have a rogue dog in the neighbourhood but now that means watching and waiting to see. We have caught him in our back yard before and his owner has cows in the next feild, so the dog knows they are there.
We are out in the country in Co.Kerry. Bit of a problem, we might have to tackle the farmer!

Thank you for your sympathy, poor wee duckie.

Carrie
