I asked Paul to check on the freezer compartment in our little fridge in the kitchen and he found a pack of five chicken breasts, reduced and with a 'use by date of 26th Feb.' We never put stuff in that compartment so really can't understand why it's there. We really don't fancy using it and I had planned something with chicken for tomorrow. No way now. It's not frozen just 'chilled'.

Nope definitely not. I think you're only supposed to keep things a week in those chiller compartments at most, and I certainly wouldn't risk chicken it's lethal.
We won't talk about how old the stuff lurking in my fridge is though :nowink:

I'd cook it, Wighty!
You'll never know what 'retired' chicken tastes like, and don't forget, the used to hang pheasants, grouse etc., for days in the stable, so I'd enjoy and save a few quid!
Once cooked, it'll be marvellous - I think...:0~

I've got several categories of stuff in my freezer:
1) Fully labelled with contents, day/month/ year. :)
2) Labelled with contents, day/month, but not year. :unsure:
3) Not labelled at all, distinctly tired looking and frostburned, and could be either animal or vegetable (probably not mineral but I wouldn't bet on it!)
Let's just say I'm still here (for now!)

In my freezer, I find purchases, that say 1st January, for example, but not what year !!!! I still cook and eat.
The 'fridge has yogurts dated the 14th April which I am making my way through. And I am still here as well. :lol: Mrs Bouquet

Using airtight containers must make stuff last longer. 'Freezer-burn' may happen when the bits are uncovered, but at those temperatures, surely a bagful of veg or meat will be just fine for ages!
Any supermarket item which says it has a sell-by date or use-by date gets short shrift from us, and how long have you read all this sort of stuff from an (very) ageing Growster? I have some delicious frozen mackeral just waiting for the mayo, and I've sent it a birthday card to celebrate its fifth birthday!
It hasn't replied yet though...

I pay as much attention to them as I do "serving suggestions" :D Everything gets the sniff test. I am however a little more careful with my sniff with chicken and with mushrooms after some unsatisfactory olfactory advice.

I certainly agree about the mushrooms, Lardman!
Mrs Growster and I celebrated nothing in particular today, by buying a ready-spit-roast chicken from a great shop near here, and the best bit of the day was just getting in the car and driving through the fabulous countryside at about 25mph, because nobody else was anywhere near us!
(Not sure what this has to do with the post subject, but it did mention chicken...)!

Well the chicken is now in a Council bin. :D Dropped off on our way to work this morning.

Whilst I will occasionally eat food that is past the use by date I wouldn't risk eating chicken that hasn't been frozen that was nearly three months past it. There are much better experiences in life than severe food poisoning.
