Well my chickens had a lucky escape, I had given them till valentines day to start laying or be served up for dinner.

Low and behold I got an egg from Primrose on Friday, and another today, she is making a big fuss about laying it though, I think the whole street know about it

Really looking forward to lovely fresh eggs again  :D

Last night I mixed the new ex batts in with the older girls so hopefully as 1 ex batt is still laying the others will get the hint and start again. I am so fed up with buying eggs.
Staffies are softer than you think.

My 3 recently started again (hurrah!) but were eating the eggs.  I increased their rations and put a plastic egg in the nest box for a couple of days to discourage them.  This seems to have done the trick except for the Rhodie!  She fell in love with the plastic egg, stopped laying and went broody on me!  I removed the egg as soon as I realised.  When I'm home I keep chasing her out but I suspect that when I'm at work she spends her days languishing there, making silly squeaking noises and gathering minute wisps of straw to her ample bosom!

I now have 4 hens laying including the Araucana after weeks of no eggs. I have not bought shop eggs for nearly 5 years now. 2 dozen in the fridge now and the neighbour will get their free eggs starting next week.

We have just gone through another cold snap where temperatures were often well below freezing all day and the hens went down to between one and three a day. Now the new ducks seem to be starting to moult and they have dropped to two a day. Thank goodness we only have a couple of customers.
