I would go for superglue, it is recommended for nail splitting in humans and works well, I am not talking about superficial splits accross the nail but major breaches and openings which might allow bacteria to enter the skin.
Superglue it is more hard wearing and reliable than nail varnish and is used in place of stitches in some cases so a lot tougher too and long lasting.
