Yes boys and girls it's time to play that game called "let's identify the strange tool" again .

It was found in the shed of the plot that my brother-in-law took over, anyone know what it is and what its used for?

It looks like an old dunse slasher. Used to clear tough plants such as brambles or persitent clumps of grass etc.

Prices on-line range from around £13 to £45. Used for brush clearance - good for nettles and brambles.

My turn? Or am I rushing?

Apologies if I am but here goes:

A handtool with fairly sharp edged curved blade and sweeping steel neck as you can see. It's mine and I love it for close up work.

I've not seen one anywhere else - wondered if anyone could name it or has seen one like it before.

might be just the nagle but it looks like what I think is called a Japanese hoe - I think it's actually for cutting stuff that's fairly short and you want to hold on to, like harvesting rice, etc.

Loverly tool, keep it oiled :-)

cheers

Dave

Glad I was right. ;) ;) :D :D During my time working at the agricultural merchants, I learned a lot of useful and some useless things.

arugla I'm sure you are correct - internet search found it easily once you had provided the name!  ;)
Well done you!

Dave: "Japanese hoe" - that's interesting as I use it as a short-handled hoe - it's brilliant.

I've looked up Japanese hoe and it seems very similar but the Japanese hoe appears to have just one sharpened working edge that's why it is made as a left or a right handed tool it seems. Also the working blade is shorter and flat being set at 900 to the shaft.

Mine has a curved blade, very pointed working tip as well as two sharp cutting edges. It can be drawn through the soil to the left or right. The tip is brilliant for spot weeding right up close as well as getting deep down under well established things like dandelions and thistles.

I found this link:  Garden hoes What an amazing range there are!

Another photo but, again, not so easy to make out the shape or the size. The blade is a good 10 or 11 inches long (27cm)

The tool is in my allotment shed so unable to try to get a better shot right now... it's pouring!!  :(

Wow!!

If there's a prize, you sir, have it!!!

Dave you are a genius!

I've had this tool for several years. I bought it from flea-bay when searching for an onion hoe. I couldn't find anything I liked the look of and traditional onion hoes for sale locally looked unwieldy and lacking accuracy.

I wanted to get in close and be speedy. Then, by pure chance, I saw an unusual looking bit of kit so bid for it. I haven't a clue how much I paid (as I forget) but it's been worth every penny. I love the thing. It's my favourite hand tool.

Having not seen one before or since I thought perhaps it was unique - a hand-made tool that someone had designed for their own use.

Without your expert work I would have continued to consider the tool a one-off.

Now... if ever it is lost, stolen or broken I could set about replacing it.
Clever stuff Dave. That'll take some beating.

A Korean hand plough it is!

And this shows exactly how I use it too!

Then don't buy anything from Two Wests and Elliott, becuse the catalogue they send is one to keep for essential reading every day...!

I only bought a few greenhouse fixings, and now I want something on every page!

True, the items are a bit pricey but I've found that they're all the best or most solid quality and well worth what they cost. Can't tell you how many hand trowels I've gone through over the years, even during a single summer, and this year I'm plonking down $27 for a very good stainless that I know will last forever (and Lee Valley will replace faulty goods if you keep your receipt).

I now have quite a few items from that catalogue and really enjoy using every one. Besides the trowel, I also plan to buy the juicer-steamer, and the large herb dryer.

For me, they're affordable because I buy only a few items each year then save up for desired items the next year. If I bought all I'd like at one shot, I'd need a big lottery winning to pay for my purchase.  :D This past year I got enough birthday and Christmas money to pay for the juicer. Just need a trip to that city to get them.
