apples what can i make other than apple sauce.
« on: August 13, 2022, 16:25 »
i have four apple trees hopefully i should get some fruit when harvest time comes around.
I have only ever made apple sauce that was the first time last year as i did not want to have any waste by just leaving the apples to rot on the trees.
I have never tried apple jam is it any good?, any other ideas, i am old school not one for fancy food or hot and spicy, just good wholesome grub.Lillileaf.

Apples make a good chutney as well.  You could eat that with all sorts of everyday foods from sausages to a cheese sandwich  :)

Cake (also freezable) - keep it in the fridge if not consumed in the first few days because it will go mouldy.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...

Apple butter is essentially just a natural jam.  High hassle factor for low return.

Depending on the variety (do you know what they are?)  there's potential for them to store naturally in an unheated room well into the new year, although some of the modern eaters go a little rubbery but they're fine for culinary use. I normally don't waste freezer space with them,  just keep them away from your furry friends.

My Dad has loads of Apples, and I pop round and pick as many as I want.
I make Apple Crumbles and mixed fruit and apple crumbles (like apple mixed with rhubarb or gooseberries) and freeze them.
Also chop up apples and freeze, have a few ice cream size tubs full of chopped apple in them. Use that for making Apple sauce or in all kinds of cakes and add a handful into curries and stir fries straight from the freezer.
Also make a load of Apple bar muffin squares and freeze. They freeze lovely for the winter as a snack, take only a few hours to thaw nicely.
A bit more complicated, I use either frozen or fresh apple in my Eccles cakes and cake muffins.
Also, make French apple tarts with Fresh apples, not too hard to make and they freeze a treat. Just right for those special occasions.

Might be worth juicing them?

A decent juicer isn't too expensive, but we also used to blend them, then strain the juice out over time, or just leave it to settle in a jug!

Fabulous with a drop of Calvados or brandy...

Was trying to find it earlier.
A good substitute for when using large quantities of oil in cakes is making an Apple oil sauce.
I use this when making my apple square muffins that requites 1 cup of oil.

Apple oil substitute sauce;
4 apples, chopped (you can use frozen chopped apples thawed for a few hours, just use a little less water)
handful of cereal
handful of raisins
1 tspn cinnamon
pinch of nutmeg
1 cup pure water
Blend all ingredients together until smooth.

wow loads of ideas there, i cannot wait to get started, apples are doing well so far, i am watering the trees on a regular basis and giving the trees some feed i do hope this is the correct thing to do.
please let me know if i am doing the right or wrong thing.
I will freeze the apples once sliced and then decide what i want to make.
  thanks everyone.
