hanging if possible - but the main thing is somewhere cool with an airflow around them - so a shelf in the garage is good - that's where mine live!. Have a good inspection as you pop each one into the net in case of any rot, or softness - it will cause the whole net-load to rot. If you have any like that, use them now.
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

You also need to check and remove any which start rotting in storage or you'll lose the whole lot. I find it more practical to string them up the traditional way as it's easier to keep an eye on them and remove dodgy ones. I tried a net once for my shallots and it ended up a sticky mess when one in the middle rotted and then spread to others and then some started sprouting roots into the dampness.

I got some free sample onion bags and they're great. Trouble is I hung my onions up from the rafter in the shed but I keep forgetting it's there and headbutting the damned thing. Doh  :nowink:  It's not as if it's hard to see  :D

I managed to find short wooden fruit crates at the grocer's. They're open slatted at the bottom for air, handles on the sides for stacking and lots of air movement.

I space the onions only one layer deep in these crates otherwise they'll heat up quickly and start to rot.
