Storing Onions......... again!
« on: September 19, 2009, 17:28 »
Hi All,

Gone through the back posts and found the best way to store...Cool Dry & Dark!
But..

I have mine nice and dry in the green house, can I store them in there as I have no other place to put them? It gets warm in the sun and I was worried that the warmth and light might affect the storing?
The shed gets hot! and is on my allotment so some distance away.
I would have them in an Onion sack.

Sorry don't really have an answer. I bought mine in from the greenhouse yesterday and put them in a veg rack in my larder. I have had success keeping them in the garage - do you have one?
I always thought that it was potatoes that needed to be dark. I think with onions that "dry" is more important than "dark". My greenhouse has so many panes misssing that my onions were getting wet...!

I kept mine in the greenhouse last year, upside down with their leaves threaded through the mesh shelves. They lasted until the next crop were ready to use. Catherine

But if you know your shed gets hot, make sure you check them often because they'll start to rot quickly. I store mine in a special basement cold cellar in slatted wood boxes one layer deep for maximum air circulation which really helps.
