Which allotment to choose?
« on: April 13, 2013, 13:41 »
Dear forum members, this is my first post as have just joined.  There are new allotments started up where I live in ayrshire, about 37 big plots.  It was a lovely walled garden before but the council closed it but luckily we can now benefit from this.  Anyhow I am quite upset as I am not sure if I have chosen the right plot as I did request one next to a wall which I got, but then there was a huge tree about 15 feet away, possibly fir, and someone told me that it would soak up the soil,  it is 3/4 round where the sun sets. but I have now changed to another one which is in an open sunny position, where the sun sets at night. there is a smaller wall behind it,  I have now been told that not all plants prefer a sunny spot and also that certain trees, for eg . like the fir or pine's roots don't stretch out that far?  Can someone please help me with this dilemna, I am quite distressed about it.  thanks.

don't stress my dear! all your veggies LOVE SUN, so the sunnier the better. I feel you have made exactly the right choice. You will find that there are as many opinions as there are gardeners, but be assured that SUN not shade, is what your lovely veggies need.  :D Happy digging !
small, Welsh and almost certainly bonkers, but can be tamed with Talisker, if required

No worries Moonstar, we rejected our first plot because it was surrounded by huge trees.  They would have given too much shade and made the ground dry ...... if ever we get a good summer ;)

It sounds from what details you give that the second plot is probably better than the first. Full sun is ideally what you need, so it sounds great.

Good luck with your first season, I hope it all goes well.

Very sure that the second will be the better of the 2 plots.
Cannot think of a vegetable that does not have the instructions Plant in a sunny position on the instructions.
Did the person saying this want the plot that you now have ???

I agree with the other replies, veg like an open sunny spot. You can create shade if needed but not sun. Lettuce springs to mind as needing a bit of shelter from the summer scorching sun ha ha as if that's going to happen

When you say fur I assume you mean Conifer? if so the root do spread and substantially I've seen a number of houses where conifer roots have caused so much foundation problems and damage.

The second plot sounds good as someone said you can create shade but not sun ...
