Are these weeds?
« on: April 29, 2017, 21:53 »
Hi, I'm new to gardening and have been trying to grow my own fruit and veg from seeds. Using multi purpose compost and ground soil and these keep popping up are they weeds?

if you didn't plant them or intend them to grow in that spot then technically they are weeds but they look to be in a line and look like broad beans to me. What seeds did you think you sowed. ????????????

Indeed. What did you sow?

They do not look like weed seedlings, I could recall. I also associated to broad beans and sunflower, perhaps.

Hi Richard, they are in almost every tray/pot of various veg seeds I have sown in the greenhouse - leeks, onions, carrots, tomatoes. Not normally in a line, they are all over the place

They could be from the compost then, whatever they are, none of those you mention, certainly.

If you are using field soil, could they be coming from bits of bindweed root? Though then there would tend to be multiple shoots, I suppose.

Thanks all. I've got a whole tray full of them, I'll grow them and see what they develop in to

Show them to us then. ;)

I was just thinking, that these are close-up, enlarged photos, they look more robust, than they are. Then most resembling amaranths seedlings. And if you are using garden soil as well, it can be anything self/bird sown in there.

Pull a few up so you can see the seed/rhizome/what it's propagating from, might help with the ID

In view of the quantities that you mention I would look for something with a small seed, that self seeds all over the place. amaranth or love-lies-bleeding does seem like a likely candidate. If there are no rhizomes I'd leave a few, if there are rhizomes then I'd pot one up but yank the rest out. Let us know when you have a certain ID

I think they might be fuschias. There are lots growing in the garden. We'll see what they develop in to

I thought they looked like fuschia but I didn't know they came so easily from seed,
if that's what  they turn out to be I think I will have to buy some seeds to try!

At max, we can be talking hardy fuchsias. No need to get frantic.
