Wolf Soil Miller
« on: March 22, 2009, 15:45 »
Hello all, first posting. Does anyone have any experience of the Wolf Soil Miller?
Does it work as advertised? Or should I save my brass?

Cheers,

Is that the thing with the blades like fingers?
if so, I can't really see the point. They do a three of four tined draw claw which does the same kind of job for less money. It makes a better job of it as well ( In my soil that is ) ;)

I was given one by my father-in-law when he gave up his allotment. As I lugged it (and the handle) back on London transport and the train south for a few hours I wondered if I'd ever use it...

He had been given it as a birthday present years before.

I'm not sure I would buy one (I certainly would not have spent that much on a new one) but, as it was given to me I tried it out.....

I was surprised - easy to use despite its weight. The rear horizontal hoe slices through the soil and weeds between rows with the greatest of ease and the mill leaves it looking fresh and well aerated. Works well on a push-me-pull-you motion as well as forward at full-steam. :) so pretty speedy.

It is really a good tool for long straight rows.... but if I had tried it and was then invited to pay full-price (along with the handle) I would probably have thought twice at least and may have stuck with my Dutch-hoe. This does a similar job (for weeding) even if it des not nibble up the soil in the same way.

On my new half plot = On heavy clay soil it copes and can break through the surface a few inches at a time. Useful. I am, however, relying on digging and compost and a fork as the main way of getting the soil into the best shape…. But it is an additional help.

Wolf Soil miller = very nice (very dear)
Digging, fork, compost, Hoe and rake = does the job

If you've loads of birthday money - go for it!! ;)
