Incubators at the ready!
« on: March 23, 2016, 09:16 »
My lovely Rcom 20 is currently equilibrating nicely.  After being sat in the attic for 4 years, it worked without any issues at all.  The only "maintenance" I had to give it was a wash/disinfect and to clear the calcium deposit from the water tubing to the heating element.

It has maintained temperature and humidity perfectly overnight

I'm picking up my eggs this afternoon (though they've been in transit a week, so I don't have high hopes for viability :/ ) and I hope to set them tomorrow morning :D

Can't wait!

They're a mix from a backyard flock, but all kinds of weird colours, like khaki, olive and blue.

Eggs have landed and are resting :D

Well my last flock - approx 50 home bred fancy birds - was wiped out over a week or two by marten attacks, and i didn't have the heart to restock.

Then I changed the chicken pen in to a veg patch, and didn't have anywhere to enclose the chickens.

I've now ordered a big walk in cage, so that I can set up a permanent run, so ready to have hens again :)

And were off...

Normally I'd let them rest for more than 5 hours, but they've been in transit for a week, so I'm risking setting them a bit early.

When you got your set up for the birds all done, buy a roll of galvie  wire, 4" planks to go round the pen, some steel spikes  3 ft high some insulaters  12 volt battery and switch box foe electric fence drill holes in the planks hammer spikes in holes all the way round untill chicken wire meets where the door to your pen iskeep a 12" gap from your pen connect up for a leccy fence, just remember to turn battery off  before you touch it, ,,,,,,that will keep your stock alive,,

I've had a total of 5 hatch, so not so bad for eggs which were 7 days in transit via parcel post.

I bought 20 eggs, 3 were broken (cracked) on arrival.  Out of 17 set, 6 were completely clear on day 10, though I didn't check, I have a feeling they were not fertile, as they were *completely* clear.  I discarded another 4 on day 17.  So locked down 8.  I discarded another yesterday and was unsure about 2.

5 Hatched I'm quite pleased about, though 2 had to be helped from their shells.

What I'm most happy about is that three are from blue/green eggs - so I have my fingers crossed they are ALL pullets (if wishes were horses...)
