Title: Strange garlic bulbs
Post by: ziemniaki on June 10, 2010, 09:24
Hello,

Very new to the forum and hoping someone can help answer my query.

Last autumn I planted some garlic, autumn variety, and it has done well over the extended winter. I checked it last weekend and it appears to be bulking up ok but some of the bulbs are now spritting from the new growth. Anyone know what could cause this and, more importantly, what I can do to cure it? It doesn't affect all the bulbs so hopefully I will get some crop but it is worrying me a little.

Many thanks,

Simon

The individual cloves have started to grow already haven't they? :(

could you have dropped a whole head of garlic there by mistake? or could it be one missed from last year?
I don't think there is anything you can do to save them, best to eat them green I'd say.
Have a look around the base of the others to see if the other bulbs are fattening into cloves already, if they are....and they are big enough, it may be a good idea to ease them up a little bit form the soil so they start drying.

It is definitely new cloves sprouting. I wondered if it could have been because the winter was long and cold, then it warmed up, then it went cold again, now it's warmer.

There was no garlic in there last year and I am 100% sure there would have been only one clove (I am too tight to plant more than one). The others aren't quite big enough to lift yet.

Thanks for the advice and I will check this week.

First for me!  As it is only one, and if it was mine, I would leave it and see what happens.
