Title: Garden shredder
Post by: Amilo on August 17, 2013, 09:20
I am thinking of getting a garden shredder and as money is tight for me are there any recommendations?

I am looking for something to shred hedge clipping and small branch, up to 40 mm in the hope that I can increase my compost production.

I'm not familiar with UK brands, but I got a small electric shredder for that job and it works fairly well. Only thin stuff plus dried leaves (not great on fresh leaves). It'll take a tall pile down quickly to a small mound.

I like my heavy duty Bosch which I got secondhand from ebay.  I can use it easily and I'm an old biddy.  You have to take your time, not rush, carefully feeding in long branches rather than try and hurry and cram stuff in  :D you do it will jam up

Picked up one from ebay for £25 and it was rubbish, ended up buying a new one from B&Q for £89 and it's magic handles long branches and hedge with ease and seldom jams up, would recommend

I bough b&q own, as it had best reviews, and warranty , really helped with clearing branches, and I use the chipping for topping up my bark paths,   But this machine I dangerous. The instructions tell you too hold the branch as its being fed/ sucked into blade, problemis the stick jump about soo much it staves and cuts your finger ( mechanic by trade so I have pretty tough hands),  and If you don't hold it you are running for cover as it spits all sorts out. I had 1 stick that was rather thick , but still fit in the 44mm hole, that was launched out again with such force it landed mid way up house roof , ( I live in a bungalow, it it's still a good 12-15 foot .       Handy machines if you are cutting a hedge every year etc, save a lot of money   but better left to professional machines if its only a 1 time cost
