Title: What breed of hens do you keep?
Post by: Eumaeus on June 13, 2010, 18:29
And did you make a decision that that breed was for you?  Or was it just a case o fwhat was available nearby?

Are you happy with the decision you made?

My flock of mutts/hybrids all came from other people when they cleared out stock so they are all oaps now.  Last year and this they have laid from spring up till late May early June and then zilch.  I "think" I have decided they all went (I have too many anyway) and we are going to choose a breed and just get 3 or 4 hens and a cock.

But there are so many out there - I jsut can't even begin to make a decision so.......please tell me what you have :)

Hi Eumaeus  :).

I've 4 orpingtons (different colours, 1 cockerel), 5 black rhodes, 1 rhode island red, 1 silver laced wyandotte, 1 seabright, 4 pekins (different colours) and 1 frizzle.

As you can see, I love to have a mixture of different breeds .

The black rhodes are VERY good layers. They lay big brown eggs every day without fail and are incredibly clean and friendly birds  :). Same with the orpingtons, but they take up quite a lot of space!! ::).

Ooh - I had a couple of buff orpingtons once (the fluffy ones?)  they were so tame and friendly - again they were pensioners that were wished on me but they were lovely birds.  The black rhodes I don' tknow - off to get the book out now :)

Most I have chosen because they looked pretty but the araucanas I especially sourced as I wanted blue eggs  :)

Mine are Suffolk Noir, a cross between a rhode Island red and a copper black maran.  Not the prettiest, but docile, quiet and reliable egg layers.

I have 10 hybrids, 2 light sussex, trio of lemon milfleur sable poot bantams and 3 cream crested legbar hens and cockril, out of the 3 one lays a green egg one a brown egg and the other a cream coloured egg.
My only buff orpington died yesterday she was a year old :(.
I am trying to get some australorps but cant seem to find anyone who breeds them in the North East.

I started with 3 hybrids all different so I could tell them apart :), a black star, a speckled star, and a amber star, then raised some chicks and ended up with 2 cream legbars and a dorking :D

i think thats the worst bit about chooks, there are so many breeds its like being a kid in a sweet shop,     I have 3 girlies, a barnelveder, an amber star and a speckledy.    There great girls,  barnevelders are just gorgeous birds to look at with the laceing on the feathers, my girl is a great layer, very big girls.   The amber star again, shes a trooper at laying, we had a wee blip with her but back to full egg production now, very very friendly girl has to have her beak into everything.   The speckledy, lovely girl to look at again a very big girl,  shes laid almost everyday for me aswell.    If i was to have another breed i would definatley go for the cream legbar, im dying for one of those lol .   nickyx
