Took some carpet that the previous plot holder had left on my new plot to the dump yesterday. Have seen signs for their shop but have never looked before. I spotted a compost bin so thought I would go and find out how much. It was £5 and is one of the large big black daleks so I had it. Didn't have time to look around any more but did spot a rabbit hutch for £10 which I might pop back for to have in my new chicken run for broodies or something for them to jump up on.
I am going to get into the habbit of popping along there once a week I think as it should be quite handy for allotment stuff.
The next thing I need is some paving slabs so fingers crossed.

You can get some good stuff at the tip, shredder £5 Jet wash £3 wire netting , proper old garden tools that don`t bend when you use them. Its just a matter of getting there at the right moment. :)

i got all my demi-johns from newport years ago.same as everywhere,got to know what to look for.

Are these proper "tips" or those recycling places where everything is dumped in huge containers?

These are proper tips which are run by the council (?) or official people. The one I was at yesterday was at bleak hall I think? Near Coffee Hall anyway.

Lucky you with your dump having a shop selling good items. Our local tip has loads of good stuff tucked away at the side or round the back of the bins, but you never ever see that they are for sale. I think the blokes who work there sell them and keep the profits.

Last time I was up at the recycling centre (it's a huge one just outside Croydon) I drove by a huge warehouse which was just full of bikes and other stuff.
They don't have a shop though.

The one near me is a recycling centre with the skips, the sell able items are kept in a portacabin nearby. Always worth a look when dropping off the non-compostable garden waste.

mine is great- Grunty Fen local authority tip- Witchford, Ely
there are a few containers with bits and bobs, and then furniture and other stuff outside. You take something up to one of the tip folk (we have women working there too!), they usually say £2.
If you need some golf clubs, there are 30 sets there
I have had some absolute bargains
Pentax P30 with 22-88mm lens and flash unit- said how much, they asked for a tenner

Some things I have fished out of the skips. I am terrible. I always come back with something!

You're all lucky your dumps do this. Ours forbid us to take anything out. Anything useful somehow ends up on the foreman's pickup truck. The rest is sold in bulk if possible as scrap for the township office to squander. The rest is either burned or buried.
However, I have brought home (quietly) a number of useful lengths of new building lumber. None particularly long, but my projects don't require much length.

O my I'm on my way, that chair is stunning and my OH has just bought a camera like that on Ebay to use while his original one goes for a service.

I love our local tip, OH groans when we go there as he feels you should be taking stuff not bringing stuff back (poor deluded man). I "do up" mirror frames & have found some excellent mirrors for 50 pence a go including some really big ones from old wardrobes that got treated with fence paint & tucked in between my trellis & my neighbours larch lap fence. Hey presto my tiny garden now seems twice as wide. I've had a few chairs for the garden for nothing but since I have no where dry to keep them they do eventually tend to disintegrate but nothing as swanky as that metal chair - note to self "keep eyes peeled" :)

I think you lot with shops at your local amenity tips are really lucky. As I said, we have lots of stuff tucked away around the back of the containers which I am certain are sold off by the blokes. Once we were there with a car load of stuff, including an old bookcase and the chap in the next car asked us if he could have it. We said yes, and we transferred it from our car to his. One of the site workers came over and told us we were not allowed to swap stuff from car to car - if we took it to the site we had to put it in the skip. We'll know next time to drive around the corner!

At the one near us,I asked if i could take something out of one of the skips, and was told not supposed to but if they don't 'see' anyone doing it,then they can't stop you!!! :D :D

went again today, just popped in while passing. I got another 300+ ltr dalek composter, 3 handfuls of beanpoles and a small roll of chicken wire. £5!!!!

took them straight up the lottie, which I need to strim tomorrow, and get my onions in- the allotment society Secretary asked me if I still want to keep the allotment, which I think is a strong hint to get my bum in gear with the weeds!
