Growing early carrots
« on: July 14, 2023, 14:09 »
Advice please.
I did really well with two rows of "early carrots" I sowed. I took the advice of a forum member and did not thin them out when they emerged and, lo and behold, I have harvested some lovely carrot-fly-free vegetables.
My question: I am taking out all my potatoes to make room for more vegetables. Is it too late now to sow some more early carrots? If not, how long will it take from sowing to harvest?

My answer is with the caveat I'm not really a big carrot grower...  :nowink:

I would go ahead and sow them. If you've had anything like the weather we've had in the UK your soil will be very moist so germination will be rapid and you can hopefully keep the slugs away from the young seedlings.

Even if they don't grow to "full" size and are a bit more slender than they could be, unless you have something else you desperately want to grow in the area go for it!

Last year I planted some in a large container that my first earlies had been in and I harvested a couple early October and the bulk in November. I don't seem to have recorded when I sowed them although I remember it wasn't immediately after harvesting but sometime later.  ::)

I always pop a row of carrots in about now, as there's a reasonable chance that the fly won't be interested, and if we have a decent late Summer and early Autumn, there could be a nice surprise!

After all, what else are you going to do with all that seed you bought all those months ago...;0)

As a matter of interest, how long are your rows (in cm/metres), Growster?

I grow them in long 6" deep planting trays, Anton. They're on a raised wooden shelf to avoid any fly, so I can't tell how long the rows would be as the seed is just cast every now and then..:0~

If I wanted to, I'd still pop some in the garden if there's space though!
