Hello from Hucknall
« on: June 25, 2019, 08:40 »
Hi everybody,

I知 new to having an allotment, in fact not actually signed up yet! We looked at 2 yesterday which are owned/managed by a charitable trust and looking at one tomorrow run by Ashfield District Council. We will decide which one to go for after that.

The 2 last night were both very overgrown so would be a challenge! The people from the committee showing us around were lovely and we saw a few others which apparently had started very overgrown but are now fully functioning allotments.

This site looks great and will look forward to learning from the great articles and helpful contributors.

Good morning Alan and welcome to the forum. Nearly, there, nearly a plot holder!!! When you say very overgrown, it it soft  weeds or neck high brambles and nettles? What about water supply... it is nearby or half way across the site? Are you allowed fruit trees? Sheds? Polytunnels? How far from home is each site?

The site you looked at sounds friendly, which is a good start. Let us know how you get on, oh, and John has some useful articles on plot clearance in "Articles and Advice" at the top of the page, if you've not seen these already

Hi thanks for the reply.

One of the plots in particular was head height brambles in some places and mare痴 tail engulfing a poly tunnel frame, but at least there is a frame. That one had 3 decent sheds too. The other was less overgrown (but still pretty bad) and only had one shed, but again pretty sound. Both plots had plenty of water butts/barrels and one even had an IBC.

There is water on the site. Not sure where the tap is but lots of hosepipes outside the plots.

8 have read the article and also the one by Munty, both very useful.
