Title: Ideas/advice for DIY tomato shelter
Post by: Middlesexbloke on January 10, 2015, 20:13
Hey

Am thinking of constructing a tomato shelter from timber and clear corrugated plastic on my plot. It needs to be about 6 feet high, I'd like to use the corrugated plastic as a roof and to cover 3 of the sides. One side would be open to allow ventilation/access. Am after advice on how to put up a strong, wind resistant frame, if anyone has any advice or ideas please let me know! Thank you.

I'd use a post hole driver to get the poles deep into the ground. Is the shelter to protect against wind? Will you be growing determinate or indeterminate tomato varieties?

The shelter is more to keep rain off of the plants, but wind too. One side would be open to keep ventilation going and prevent overheating. I do have use of a post rammer so that's no problem. I'll be growing mainly indeterminates in there. Thanks!

Don't forget to put your support structure for the toms (stakes etc) before you put the roof on, and make sure the roof is tall enough to accommodate their height.  Also, it might be a good idea to leave some way for air to get through the covered sides (holes or gaps) so that your structure doesn't get knocked about too badly in the wind.

Great tips there, thank you. Just need to work out a basic plan of how I'm actually going to build it, how many posts I need, etc...that's the bit I'm stuck on, I'll probably be able to muddle through the construction of it lol.

After weeks of blood, sweat, epic Tourette's-esque swearing fits and moaning....the tomato 'shelter' is complete! It kinda evolved along the way and became more of a greenhouse. Got much of the wood for free from local builders and the windows from freecycle. It doesn't budge an inch and I'm hopeful it'll last a good few years.
