Strawberry runners and Rhubarb crowns
« on: November 07, 2013, 19:54 »
I have just received delivery of 30 bare root strawberry runners from Blackmoor's and 2 bare root rhubarb crowns and wondered what was best to do with them? Would they all be ok to go out on the plot in the beds I have for them or would they stand a better chance if I potted them up individually and put them in the greenhouse for the winter?

Rhubarb crowns definitely plant outside, I'd be tempted to pot up the strawberries and plant out in March in case they rot in the very wet soil at the moment.

Im sure I either read or seen it in a prog on tv that you can put bare rooted strawberry plants in the fridge then fetch them out to plant when you ready :)

My rhubarb is now losing all its leaves, and dying back. When I got my first bare crowns they rotted in the ground as we had a lot of rain.

I would make sure the ground is not too wet for the rhubarb and possibly a bit of protection from getting to wet.

I would pot the strawberries up into  large pots and leave in the greenhouse.

I started off with 25 strawberry plants ,and by potting up runners ever year  have now increased that to over a 1000 plants .

Commercial strawberry growers plant their runners into raised hills/ridges. This way the plant takes what it needs then sheds excess water into the trenches on both sides. It would take a bit of work to get the ridges made but would sort out your rotting problems. Another trick they use is to cover the ridges in weed suppressant with just holes for the runners to be planted through.

Thank you for all of your replies, I have quite sandy soil so I think I will plant out the rhubarb in a well dug, composted area and plant out the strawberry runners in ridges through weed fabric and see how they get on. What would be the best thing to add to the soil? Chicken pellets, growmore, blood, fish & bone?
