I have inherited a rickety fruit cage in our new property.
It is approx 5mx5m area.
I intend tore-use as much of the galvanised netting as possible, plus adding new as needed.
What I need is some practical advice on what materials to construct a new frame out of - without breaking the bank!

You can get tanalised tile/slate batten delivered by most builders merchants, MTV, it's not that expensive and a careful arrangement will make quite a sturdy frame for your netting.

You may need some brackets at the corners, but if you can, a few triangular pieces will see to that - it all depends how you feel about using the tools to get the design working...

Good luck anyway, it sounds like a decent project for Easter!

Hello fruity cage.  Hop onto Freecycle and look (or ask) for curtian rods/rails. there are usually quite a few looking for new owners.  Plumbing suppliers have a good selection of copper 90 degree & three way joiners quite cheap.

I use tie wraps, bamboo canes and old tent poles for my chicken wire cages.  I guess it depends how posh and/or permanent you want it to be.

when i built our fruit cage i had some 3x2 timber that i put in the ground then put slate batten /slate lath corner to corner middle and bottom depending on length the laths ours where aprox 3 meter  long and inch by inch also made a door one end and covered the cage with heavy duty windbreak shading netting  perfect
