New chicks awww
« on: August 17, 2011, 18:59 »
Hi all. After a few worried moments when I first got Mary & Agnes they have since been an absolute delight !!!! About a month ago I noticed Agnes kept sitting on the eggs all day. Realising she was broody a neighbour gave me 5 fertile eggs which I placed in the coop with her. She was brilliant, although she didnt like me taking Mary's egg off her each day (she had even stopped laying and she kept tucking Mary's egg underneath her too). I am delighted to say today Agnes is mum to 4 (so far) baby chicks :D  They are all doing well and I am so proud of her :) Mary is very curious with all the going's on and she laid a rubbery soft shell egg today  Do I need to feed the new babies anything special ???

they need chick crumb and water in a proper chick drinker or a shallow dish with pebbles in (chicks can drown very easily if you give them water in a normal drinker).
Staffies are softer than you think.

Very many congratulations on the safe arrival of your new babies. It is s exciting when they arrive isnt it, and if you are anything like me, you will worry constantly that they are OK. They WILL be. Their mummy will take good care of them.
One word of warning...I went straight out and bought chick crumb for the babes, but within 4 days, Mum had them outside with the others so they started eating the normal food. I think that is why they are better segregated. I was totally unprepared.
Good Luck and dont forget the photos please!!
Mary.

mine have chick crumb first thing then they are let out after they have filled up (after 10 am). I then get them back in their run about 4pm and give them more chick crumb  :)

Well the chick are doing really well, they are 7 weeks old now !!!! I do have a couple of questions though. The mainly brown and black/brown one's have 5 toes on each foot and the black one has 4 toes on each foot. Is this normal ? Can anyone tell what breed they are and also when will I be able to tell what sex they are ??

Hello Dotttyaussie,
lovely pics :D
Some breeds, like silkies, have five toes.  I am not an expert with identifying breeds but you could have a silkie cross.  With silkies you can only tell if they are cockerels or hens when they start to lay or crow so you may have to wait.
Good luck and keep us posted  :)

They look lovely.
Two other breeds with five toes are Dorkings and Faverolles.
