Hi
I have 12 Block Rock hens with a cockerel and all the hens are laying well. My neighbour has got 24 approx Gold Line hybrids and says that my cockerel is probably stopping his hens from laying as he is only getting 5 eggs approx a day from his birds. Is this likely?

Hi

My neighbour says that having my cockerel so close to them all they want to do is get to him and they are not laying because of this. Is this a load of nonsense?? I am fairly new to keeping chickens and l have never heard of this. I have noticed my neighbour's hens have been short of water a few times, could this effect their laying?

A friend told me that he read somewhere if the hens are short of water for any length of time it can affect their laying.
As regards to the cockerel, that's a load of rubbish.

Thanks everyone.

l feel relieved now to know it's not my cockerel's fault for his poor egg production. Will try tactfully to mention supplying more water to his hens.!!! :) :)

If anything, it might make them lay more!!    :D But no, what a load of twaddle!

Like the others said, they could be a bit de-hydrated because of lack of water poor things!!!!

That's even funnier than the BS my nasty neighbours come up with!

Funnily enough I was reading just yesterday about water shortage stopping them from laying.
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

Actually, if its a new cockerel and your neighbours hens can see it then yes there is a chance its stopped them from laying. Hens hate stress and this could be a factor, however after a fewweeks they should return to normal................................having no water is another probable cause!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
