Title: Photo Competition #12 - Scarecrows & Bird Scarers
Post by: John on June 04, 2009, 11:11
Scarecrows and Bird Scarers - there's some amazing scarecrows to be found and weird and wonderful contraptions, dazzling displays of CDs So get snapping! Don't forget to put a little description with your photo. Perhaps where you saw it, what makes it special to you?

There's a prize! Either a copy of one of my books (http://www.allotment-garden.org/book/index.php) or if you've got them all (bless you!) a copy of Virginia Shirt's The Right Way to Keep Chickens (http://www.poultry.allotment-garden.org/keeping-chickens/hatching-chicks-eggs.php)

This competition will run until 26th July - with voting open to members for a week after.

The simple rules:

  • You can enter one photograph into the competition which should be no more than 640 pixels wide.
  • It can be anything you want that scares birds!
  • It should be accompanied by a short title and some description.
  • The competition is open to all "Full Members".
  • At the closing date we will add a poll for members to vote on and the most popular photo will be the winner.
  • The winner will receive a prize as listed above and the winning photo may be placed in a permanent photo gallery along with the best runners up.
  • Closing Date for Entries: Sunday 26th July 2009 when voting will be allowed by all members until Monday 2nd August

Full rules can be found

If my son wasn't in his best clothes it would be very difficult to tell them apart! This was taken at the Eden Project.

I have just acquired myself a scarecrow...well, I'll have him after the garden walkabout this Sunday the 28th, he's currently wearing a wedding suit and top hat, but I'll be adapting his clothing sightly and putting him on the plot...pics to follow :)

Didnt know about this post. finished our scarecrow today and thought i would search and look at other peoples before adding his, I searched and came up with this post.

The children have named him Mr. Tom

He has scared fellow plot holders to death but the birds seem to love him

He's brilliant Beetroot queen. I would keep an eye on him though as you may find his clothes going walkabout as they look in good condition.  :D

I've shown our ponies before (Shetlands) but why is there such emphasis placed on what the 'shower' is wearing than the pony itself.  The rules for this are as bad as showing an onion in a show! :)

we took our pony Ziggy ( her registered name is Syon Signet) to Redcar show when Sam was 7, the judge placed her as highly commended and then told my dad that Ziggy was streets ahead of the other ponies and would have won had she been wearing the correct tack, he asked what was wrong with the tack and she said she needed a show saddle, Ziggy is difficult to fit, and had the only saddle we could find which was a GP, my dad was furious and said he thought it was about turn out, presentation, and how the pony went, on the way home he said right! we'll get her a b****y show saddle,  with her high withers and being narrow she needed a specially made one and the cost would be over £1000, needless to say Ziggy never got her saddle and was never entered in anymore show classes.

I have dug up most of our earlies now. The weather turned as they were ready so we haven't been able to get out and dig. They are Rocket and most of them are rather large for earlies but they are fine. Hopefully will be digging the Desiree tomorrow.  :D

Sadly those headphones demonstrated that you need to be careful where the cable is when using secateurs :(

I'm usually plugged into radio 4 but if I'm alone on the site then the MP3 player might get a go. Have to be alone as they run screaming when I sing along.

I avoid being plugged into radio 4 when others are around - sometimes I've been known to answer back to some programmes or even laugh out very loud. This can disturb the neighbours even more than my singing.
