Title: Betsy update
Post by: janet12000 on February 06, 2010, 20:14
Betsy is still with us, but still seems very fed up.  :(

The duck vet is not back until Monday so I'll just have to wait.

The only thing physically wrong with her is a sort of white crusty stuff around her eyes, and she doesn't seem to be pooing? Not had much luck with googling the symptoms.

They both went in the bath today, and whilst her sister was having a jolly old time Betsy kind of floated half under the water. (see pic)

I hope I haven't done the wrong thing, but the other duck (Pretzel) was going so berserk I have had to reunite them.

Have also decided that I need to stop getting so bl**dy emotional about my feathered friends in the garden!! (your support is greatly appreciated  :))

She does look very under the weather :(.  Where in the house are you keeping her??
She needs to be warm, but not too warm as this will make her overheat.
Make sure above all that she gets plenty to drink. Any natural yoghurt??? she might like that too. Marmite or brewers yeast?? That's full of goodness to help her too.

Hope some of this helps.

Oh and when she comes out of the water make sure you dry her off. When ducks are ill they retain the water on their feathers. If she's under the weather she wont be waterproof.

Thanks Sam.
She had a comfortable night in a box in my bedroom.
I will try her with some marmite tomorrow. She is drinking with encouragement which is good, but still not eating and her head is down.

I couldn't believe how much her sister missed her!
I have put her back outside now as the other duck was going so mad, and I have to think of the neighbours.  :(

Pretzel spent the day squawking like crazy until I put Betsy back in the pen!!

She does look a bit like she has wet feathers which is probably as she is not preening as she should with being poorly.

Although things like Myco are far more common in hens the crusty eyes may point that way in which case the vet will be able to give her some antibiotics. Foamy eye is common in ducks and can be the result of injury or general ill health.
