Onion going to seed
« on: June 26, 2009, 22:37 »
Hi guys

Sorry for the daft wuestion but this is my first year growing.

My neighbour said I should dig all my onions up and put them in the bid as they all seem to be going to seed?

Why does this happen and can you stop it at all? also are the onions un edible when this happens.  I have just walked around our site and I would say 99% of the onions on the sites have gone to seed?

You should cut off the flower stalk asap.

You can allow the onion to keep growing until the leaves die off, but when you harvest them, make sure you eat those which had flower stalks first, as they won't keep well.

I doubt you can do anything now to prevent it, but there's been a lot of posts about onions flowering / bolting recently so if you use the search facility you should find them
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days all attack me at once...
