Title: Strawberry growing System?
Post by: adri123 on May 31, 2017, 07:36
Hi

I've got enough room in the polytunnel to have an experiment with a strawberry growing system

Has anyone any idea what's needed to get a mini version of something like the attached picture up and running?

Thanks for any replies.

Adri

That would be dead posh!

Ours are in windowboxes on two-tier staging, one at 75cm, one at 1m 50cm approx. Keeps the mice from eating them and under cover the birds can't get them either.

The tunnel is very new so there is no watering system in place yet, just me with a can, but I have upended a couple of bottomless plastic bottles in each trough so that the water goes to the roots and not on the fruit.

Not sure if that helps really....... maybe?

Ours are on a wooden trellis, in individual 6" pots, hanging in these wire frames. (You see a lot of them in France, and usually have geraniums etc in them. We used to buy a couple each time we went over to visit a favoured alcoholic-supplying grocer in Calais)! Our local garden centre also had some for sale at around a fiver each, but the one in the close up is ages old, so has done itself proud for over twenty years!

(The close up has a fuchsia in it, so take no notice...)!

I just wanted to keep the plants off the ground, and make it easier to pop a net over when the fruit has formed.

I like the look of those Growster. I can feel another project for Mr Sunny coming on any minute now! (After he's finished The List of course!)

Thank you, KC!

I only chucked them up there next to the greenhouse as we had no space from a previous position, and last year I think we had a few toms up that trellis (or maybe some sweet peas), but anyway, they'll at least get some sunshine and we'll get a few each breakfast - I hope...

Those little metal frames last forever though, and I can't find them on the net at all! Funny that! The water trays rust through so we just plonk in another one like the second pic, and I threaten to paint them every winter, when the evenings draw in and never have...

I've got 36 x 4 pint milk containers hanging on a Plotfather construction. Strawberries seem to be growing ok. I've asked him for another one next year. Found the idea on here somewhere but don't know how to find or post the link! 🙄

That's the one Growster. Plotfather made an adaptation of that one. It looks as though it will be successful in that it is easier to cover to keep the nibblers orf!

Will try to get a picture of on here but please don't hold your breath. I have also used them in the ground next to large plants to drip feed water right down at the roots. Very useful things these milk containers

Milk containers are also great for home-made wine! They do get a bit manky after a few fillings, but as we use two a week (for milk that is, more for wine...;0), that's not really a problem!

Nice one Fairs!

Easy to net too, so you're well on the way to a pick-your-own-when-it-suits time...

Just a few strawbs each day is a marvellous pastime!

Still using my strawberry bed this year as the planter has first year plants. So far the strawberry bed has yielded about 7 lbs of fruit. It was 2 .75 lbs today. Plotfather will make another planter for next year😀
