Apples
« on: June 09, 2016, 19:55 »
Really please with the grafted apples, especially as it was my first attempt.  It's looking like just 2 failures out of 14, both of these were double cleft grafts I did very late. It should mean I have at least 1 of every variety I received  :D Id like to try some chip budding next month too.

The bad news looks to be from my existing trees, despite being covered in blossom this year, there's very little fruit set  :( If they hadn't have been covered in blossom I might have thought it was my bad pruning, I can only think it was the very late frost we had. Anyone else with poor fruit set this year ?

I'm in Worcestershire too, and my apples are absolutely crammed with fruitlets, but my pears have very little fruit.  Last year it was just the opposite.

Very mixed here in N Cumbria. Apples look great, pears and plums poor and my single cherry tree looks OK

I am pleased with most of my grafts.

P16 rootstock      10 out of 11
M27 rootstock       4  out of 4
MM106 rootstock   3 out of 4
M26 rootstock        4 out of 5
B9 rootstock           4 out of 5
Grafted onto existing trees    9 out of 12

Pears:
Quince C           3 out of 4
Grafted onto existing trees    8 out of 10

Downside:
P22 rootstock        1 out of 10

Cherries:
Gisela 5            1 out of 3
Weiroot 720     2 out of 8

Plums:
St Julien     0 out of 2   (must have been some dodgy scions, Lardman  ;)   )

Bought Apricot and peach scions and they looked pretty shoddy when they arrived:
Apricot   0 out of 2
Peach, didn't even bother trying to graft it.

All in all, I am happy with the results, a bit disappointed with the cherries as they started off looking really good and I really wanted to start some trees this year.

The P22 rootstocks may have been bad. All the other failures have produced suckers from the rootstock but the P22 are showing no sign of life at all.

The failing rootsocks,  I am letting produce suckers and picking them off and trying to root them, the first half dozen look pretty good so far. Planning to do a larger batch tomorrow.

Existing apples and pears have a good set of fruit. Looks like I have some codling moth damage, picked a fair few fruits off this evening but they will need a lot of thinning anyway.

Plums flowered too early in the cold spell when nothing was flying so have a very poor set.

Peaches in the greenhouse, one tree has five fruits in the other greenhouse another has eighteen fruits.

Don't give up on the failures yet, Lardman.

One of my 'failures' has suddenly sprouted today.
