Hello, and has my land been poisoned?
« on: February 18, 2009, 23:09 »
Hello all!  I am absoultely brand new here, & have acquired an empty garden in which to plant veggies.

The plan is (was) full on organic veg.

But sadly my very first post is to seek reassurance.  The neighbour sharing the project with me decided last Saturday that the grass paths between the plots didn't look very nice, so he put lawn moss/weedkiller (containing mecoprop) all over them.  A lot.

So - are my chances for organic produce ruined?   :(

Don't worry about it Adey !

It won't leach horizintally onto your veg plot.  It would kill your veg if it did  ;)  but don't eat the grass dear

He doesn't sound very interested in growing organically.
Does he even understand the concept or the reasons?
Better watch he doesn't start spraying your brassica's with insecticide!  ::)
I demand the right to buy seed of varieties that are not "distinct, uniform and stable".

I think there's a bigger issue about communicating with your pal.  Perhaps now is the time to have a little chat about how you both take decisions that might affect both your plots?

What is he playing at? Is he your first choice for sharing or was he thrust upon you?

Definitely get him down the pub and give him a talking to and agree the way forward.

Thank you Aunt Sally and all very much!

I am greatly releived, but at the same time yes, there may be compatibility issues!

Basically this is an unused garden that we were given permission to use - all fired up last summer at the prospect, he & his young family only eat organic produce  - but within a week I found him spraying Tumbleweed everywhere 'because its quicker'.

I think he'll get bored soon & I'll have the plot to myself...

A lot of people prefer to take the easy route at the beginning to clear the land but then settle down to being organic. Don't be too hard on him, just speak to each other and sort out what you want, and what rules are going to apply to the plot.
Other than that you can only devide it into 2. That way what you do with your bit's up to you alone :)
