Sweet Pepper seeds have not germinated?
« on: February 18, 2014, 14:41 »
Hello
I am in the process of growing some Sweet Pepper F1 Mowhawk and F1 Redfire from seed but they appear to be lagging behind all of my other fruit and veg. I don't have a greenhouse so I use my conservatory as there is no direct sunlight on it but it is bright. I grow all my fruit and veg in individual cell trays from seed in the conservatory and all but the peppers have sprouted.
I decided to move the peppers to the kitchen window sill where I have Basil grown from seed, flourishing away, and am hoping maybe the pepper seeds may prefer a warmer spot to germinate.
The peppers were sown about 3 weeks ago from 2 packets of a well known brand seed and still not a smidge of a seedling to be seen.

What am I doing wrong?

Any advice would be great :)

I guess they were just not warm enough to germinate, as peppers like about 18-20 degC.

They can take up to three weeks though, so there might still be a chance.

if they are not up in the next few days it may be a good idea to sow a few more and keep them warm somewhere until they are up.

I'm still having seedlings pop their heads up so give them a chance. Peppers like to take their time and I'm experiencing dramatic differences in germination times. One popped up after only a few days, the others are following and I'm still seeing nothing from some containers.

They do need to be in the warm to germinate.

Don't worry, they take ages, Caroline!

Tell us when they appear, eh?

It's all about heat and humidity for quick germination. If you can get soil temp of between 25-28 degrees, and provide a humid atmosphere(covered in a piece of glass, or propagator lid) you will get more even germination, and quicker too.

I sowed 6 different kinds of chillies and peppers in my DIY propagator on Saturday.  They are more or less all up!!!

Now I'm freaking out about what next!  Will they do on a window cill with the silver foil trick?

Knew I should've waited!

Adri.

They need as much light as you can give them, and need to be kept at least above 10 degrees at all times.

Most peppers are green at first and ripen to red, but if you want orange, yellow, purple ones etc, then yes, you do need different varieties

My peppers are going in and out. Polytunnel during the day and house at night.

Temperatures in the polytunnel peaked at 29c yesterday but have been down to 2c (hence bringing the seedlings in).

Mine will be on the windowsill with a tin foil reflector.  Just keep regularly pinching the tops out adri.  It makes the plants compact and multi-branched.  The more branches, the more fruit they produce  ;)  :)

I think this is where I have been going wrong, I've yet to be successful with peppers or chillis but this year will be my year!  :D
