Hi

I'm about to replace the roof on my plot's shed and add guttering etc to collect the rainwater. Can I use the collected water straight away or should I discard it for the first few weeks to allow any surface chemicals on the new roof to be washed away?

I do seem to remember a post on this forum about apparently contaminated run-off water from a shed roof, but I'm not sure whether it was more that just a suspicion.

Obviously depends on what you have re-roofed with; corrugated plastic should be safe but the traditional roofing felt could be a bit dodgy especially if you have been a bit "generous" with the sealing compound!

I re-roofed my shed earlier this year and didn't collect the first few run-offs but I've been collecting and using the water since then with no problems.

Thanks JG for the quick reply. I should have said that I'm going to use standard roofing felt left over from when I replaced the felt on my garden shed.

It should be fine - I'd use it straight away
