New girl laid two eggs yesterday
« on: September 27, 2014, 09:40 »
My latest chook, Jasmine, came into lay yesterday. I watched her go into the nest box, and after a little while went to check on her, and lo and behold! she was sitting very proudly on TWO eggs. The one was small, like you'd expect the very first egg to be, about 2 cms long, but the other was a perfectly normal sized egg. I know she laid both of them because I only have one other bird laying, and I'd removed her egg earlier, and the nest box was empty when Jasmine went in.

I've never had this happen before, and wondered if it was common.

Thanks for the reply. I've had 'wind eggs' laid before by a couple of my other hens, but never at the same time as a normal egg. This morning she laid a single, perfectly normal egg and seemed very proud of it judging by the way she was strutting round the run afterwards.

She did it again today - two eggs, one normal and one small one. I'd kept the first one she'd laid to show my granddaughter the 'tiny, fairy egg' so now I've had two days on which she's laid two eggs. Today I cracked open the two tiny eggs, and they were perfect - complete with proper yolks. I hope she's not going to make a habit of this because, surely, she's going to be exhausted. Hopefully she'll settle into a normal laying pattern, but do you think I should give her a tonic or something to help her while she's laying two eggs at a time?
