Title: Broad beans: lots of flowers no bean pods.
Post by: tassie on May 21, 2010, 16:48
I have a nice looking crop of broad bean plants that are about waste high. They have been covered with loverly flowers that have now died off on the bottom 2/3 of the plant. The flowers have not developed into pods as I expected. When do the pods develop?

I initially netted them (this is only my second season gardening). Could this have prevented pollination?

I have never netted my broad beans just pinched out the tops when the flowers have set to deter blackfly. I have often found that the first lower flowers don't set so I wouldn't worry too much. It could be the dry conditions or the right pollinating insects haven't been around. See how you go.
