My New Life on an allotment
« on: September 11, 2007, 20:35 »
My wife and I took on an allotment last November and spent many long hours getting it prepared for this year.  We have had some fantastic crops but now have a real probelm with those pesky rabbits and pidgeons who seem to delight in eating our crops despite lots of netting everywhere any answers to how we can make life easier rather than netting everything?
SURPRISED OF SCOTHERN

Netting - sorry. I have the same problem. It's been the only answer.
Did it really tell you to do THAT on the packet?

Hiya Tony we suffered badly this year with pigeons netting is the way forward, thankfully we don't have rabbits.

Our plot has a major rabbit problem and the whole allotment site is plagued by them. On the advice of others at the site we have used galvanised mesh around the growing area which we are expanding outwards as we create more beds.

A gun would be cheaper though.

We buried it about 8 inches into the ground and its about 3 ft high. So far, no rabbits have got through to our veg. We use netting for birds.
Lynne.

So much to do, but so little time.

There's a particularly stupid rabbit that sits in the middle of the car park at our allotments and you have to drive around it.  You can get within about 4 ft of it. Shame I'm a veggie really, but I think its days may be numbered as the nights get colder and thoughts turn to stews!
