Hello,

Thanks for all your help.
"Bessie" is still the same, in fact I just put her in her box outside with the others, she seems to be paralysed or can't stand up.

I read earlier on in the week that olive oil is great as it flushes the system an may help with an egg bound hen. No change.

That's interesting using frontline ( buy it for my cat from the vets). Did you say Kitten  strength?

Re cat food, got a small tin of sheba and mashed it with water, pulls up the syringe fine. Bit tricky at first opening her beak, can now manage between thumb and finger and use syringe with other hand. Bearing in mind she is quite still.

Only thing I have noticed is that her droppings are a dark green, don't know whether its the oil or cat food tho.

No real change , she looks in great condition too ! :(
Have been keeping hens for 3 years - currently have 12.
Enjoy a bit of " The Good Life "

I would suggest that you take her to the vets :(

Thank you for your help. As she was getting weaker my neighbour who is a farmer ( who probably thinks I'm mad taking so much care of this old chicken  ! ), Kindly sent Bessie to the great coop in the sky. She had lost weight, and couldn't seem to use her legs. He did it so swiftly too.  Will now have to tell the children when they come back from school !  :(

It sounds as though you have done the right thing, hard though it is to do. At least she had a good life with you :(

Sorry it came to this Sassy. Best thing. But it's a hard decision isn't it. I did the same yesterday with my poorly chook - she was younger than Bessie but much the same symptoms - my neighbour did a quick and easy job - though I couldn't be there  :(
Hope the children took it OK - there are a lot of much-loved chooks in chicken heaven.

Oh Thank you. It was hard telling the children , they had even asked their Dad ( a carpenter) if he could make her some wheels !
