Wahey! Hatched my first chick!
« on: June 21, 2012, 00:09 »
Over the moon. Second attempt at hatching after the last 6 failed to materialise.
Hatched in the early hours of the morning after pipping yesterday afternoon. Sadly the other 5 eggs failed to hatch, two were not fertile, other 3 have dark shapes in them, but obviously not going to hatch (it's day 23 now)

'Nugget' settling well into the box I have built.

Can anyone see any issues with the setup here? It's sitting at a healthy 95 deg Fahrenheit.

Congratulations, do you know what breed it is?

with regards to the temp' just see how the chick responds, if it stays more towards the edges of the box it is a bit warm, if it stays under the lamp and doesnt move it will be a bit cold. 95 sounds ok though.

Because you have got a fixed light like mine, if you have already got any other method of turning the heat down in days to come, i recomend one of these

All good fun!

Excellent! Will get one of those. I was going to wire in a thermostat, but that will be just the ticket.
The breed is a Millefleur Pekin Bantam. Hopefully it will be a 'she'........not keeping it if it's a cockerel, instead will be living its life at a local farm.

You haven't thrown the eggs out have you?  Eggs can sometimes take upto 25-26 days to hatch!

Also, next time, leave the chick in the incubator until it is fully dry and fluffed up.  this might take 24-36 hours.  Chicks can survive the first 48-72 hours without food and water as they absorb the rest of the yolk, so there is no rush to get them out of the incubator :)

Not thrown away the other eggs just yet. They are still in the inky being closely monitored by my 7 year old son! :-)
Only reason why I took this one out of the incubator was that it looked it was trying to eat bits of shell and was concerned what that may do to it. It had been in there approx 20hrs by that point.
