You might be a bit late to grow them this year as they need a long growing season. I would also suggest growing in bags or pots until you decide you like them. I started with 6 tubers three years ago, I've never had to replant as digging them all out is practically impossible. If you want some tubers PM me in October / November time and I can send you some to plant next year.

They have a lovely nutty flavour, and I've had them roasted, mashed, in soup, pureed and as chips (crisps). My kids aren't too keen on them.

Oh and ummmmmmmmmmmmm they are renowned for giving you wind!!!!!!
I was put on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things; right now I am so far behind I will never die.

Yes indeedy.  But worth it for the lovely flavour.  Just don't eat them when you've got work the next day
Lotty holder since Aug 09... I've FINALLY finished clearing it! On with the p.lanting  ....

About 5 years ago I planted some I'd bought from the supermarket (was packaged as "gourmet food"   but also an opportunity to taste them before growing) and they've been fine  ;)

Try before you buy !

I rather fancied them after watching Carol making chips with them ..... Mistake. I think I managed 1 before I realized I wasn't keen on the taste or the after effects.

3 Years late having dug the area over and hand weeded twice each year I still have them growing now  :(

Be warned - they grow like a tenacious perrenial weed. definitely not for your rotation borders. Grow them in exile in an isolated bit of scrap and they'll do fine. In fact they will be indestructible!

Be warned, it is utterly impossible to get rid of them all.  Make sure that wherever you plant them is where you want them coming up for a good few years.  I planted a load last year, had quite startling digestive issues and decided that I would give them a miss .  I thought I had cleared the ground but they are popping up all over the place from the tiniest tubers.

We dug down at least three foot by three foot by each tuber we had planted to get each one outl. NO WAY.  They appeared at least six foot away from that. Worse than horseradish in  my opinion
